Finish the Year Strong in God: An Ode to Soap Operas

When I was a kid, I was addicted to soap operas. Yes, it’s true…and I’m bravely admitting it.

Of course, my access was limited to summer vacation and school holidays, and there was an ongoing war among my friends between the General Hospital and Guiding Light fans. Click reply and tell me if you had a favorite!

My husband has fond memories of watching As the World Turns with his grandmother. It’s famous for it’s opening line:

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.

How true that statement is, perhaps based on the words of James:

Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes. James 4:14

As I write this on December 4, the sands of the year are running low: just 27 days left.

And you’re probably hearing and reading all the “finish the year strong” sentiments:

“Just 27 days left to make an impact!”

“Go make the rest of this year the BEST of this year!”

Blah. Blah. Blah.

Here’s my coaching for you, my high-achieving sister in Christ, as you seek to finish the year strong:

Don’t be lulled into complacency and give up on God’s plan for your year (e.g., don’t sit and watch the soaps instead of being obedient to God’s direction).

By the same token, don’t be overrun by the noise to end the year “strong.”

In either approach, we miss the point that this is God’s business, and His plan is accomplished in His strength and power, not ours. It takes trust in Him. It takes focus on His Word. It takes knowing His plan prevails.

And it takes humble awe to accept that He could do all of this without us, yet He lovingly and graciously invites us to be His co-laborers!

Finish the year strong in God’s strength alone.

I pray this gives you hope, renewed focus and excitement for what can still be done in the next 27 days when you let God be the CEO!
